I found the rainbow's end 
in a handsome country town 
church bell sounds 
wind whirls round 
in waves of corn 
bathed in gold and brown 
I was lost but I got found 
where magnolia trees abound 
carefree and fun I 
knew I'd never see the sun go down 
on my handsome country town

this town has belonged 
to its people since forever 
but these days our lives 
are guided by the schemes 
of distant un-named men 
who own our world and own our dreams 

the walk with Jesus sign was over Ruth's Cafe 
steak and eggs while farmers argue politics and hay 
now rain-warped boards cover broken glass with gray 
the old remain to make the best 
of what was left behind 
when promise turned away 
and left our small town ways to decline 
proud and free 
I never thought I'd see the sun go down 
on my handsome country town
